For my Environmental Science class I have the opportunity to do scuba diving as part of a research project. I get to train to be a certified diver and have the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone while having fun with my friends. I’m excited to try something new, but I’m also a little nervous to be that far underwater. I know anything can happen and I’m worried that by some weird occurrence I will freak out underwater. I feel like I just need some reassurance that I will be fine. Maybe its just my paranoia kicking in.
I have always wanted to try scuba diving because my dad has a scuba license and when he was younger he went diving a lot and has some really amazing stories about what he saw and experienced. He talked to me a lot about what to do and what not to do while diving when I decided to do scuba so I think I will be prepared when the time comes.
My research project for scuba will consist of me and my partner (who is not doing scuba) studying how the health of kelp is affected by being located off of Catalina Island and at Corona del Mar. We plan on taking water samples from both areas and testing them, then measuring how much kelp there is in each region using quadrats. This is still a very basic plan and we hope that later we will have a better idea of how to carry out this research. Both my teacher and scuba instructor have given us various ideas and different aspects to consider so we will see how it all works out! Hopefully I will have more to update about later. Have a nice day!
